BASD TECHNOLOGY FORMS
Education is the business of helping students realize their dreams. Our district’s goals, guided by its strategic plan, is to help ALL students excel by leveraging technology, implementing innovative programs and scheduling for seniors, and explicitly teaching students the important life skills necessary for total wellness ultimately, leading to happy and healthy adults.
In 2018-19, the Bedford Area School District brought two exciting new initiatives that enhanced student learning and provided more efficient communication for families. After two years of research and discussion, we were ready to implement three major technology advancements in the district. First is the One-to-One (1:1) initiative, which will provide iPads for all students and teachers. Research shows strategic use of personal technology can greatly enhance learning experiences for students when used in conjunction with an effective learning management system. Therefore, our second initiative was the introduction of a new learning management system called Schoology. This online system is a convenient and thorough tool that will provide detailed day-to-day information for students and families. In addition to lesson plans and assignments, Schoology will be used to communicate important dates for tests, field trips, and more. Schoology will partner with our third initiative called Skyward, which will update and track data records for students and parents. This additional web-based tool will warehouse data such as biographical information, schedules, grades, and more. It replaced our MMS Parent/Student Portal. We are confident the implementation of these initiatives will meet the school district’s goal of ensuring students are provided with learning opportunities keeping with current best practices in education. We feel students and parents will benefit from all three initiatives, but realize there will be many questions as we begin the process of change.
