On September 24, 2025 Bedford Elementary had a “Reading Under the Lights: Reading Goals and Family Fun” Night on the Bedford Middle School gym. Students and their families were encouraged to participate in many activities such as, a scavenger hunt, basket raffle, book swap, and each received a new book to take home. Varsity Cheerleaders brought extra spirit and fun by offering temporary tattoos and face painting. The Southern Alleghanies Museum of Art, Old Bedford Village, Rebellion Bookstore, and Fort Bedford Museum were present to give parents and children ways to enjoy time together in our small town. BHS varsity soccer, tennis, cheerleaders, and football players spent time interacting with the students and read with families as well. A timer was set for 15 minutes during which families went onto center court and read books together. According to the Child Mind Institute even a few minutes of reading together gives the parent and child a chance to slow down and connect with each other. The experience of sitting together and hearing the parental voice engages their brain in a way that makes learning easier.
