Veterans at Bedford Elementary

Four local veterans visited fourth grade classrooms to speak to students and do activities. Sarah Garcia, an Army- EMT veteran, organized the presentation for the students. She talked about pulling wounded off the battlefield, about women in combat, the importance of honoring our country, the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty, the Flag and the bald eagle. She told them to keep the flag off of the ground and keep a light on the flag at night. She had students make a bald eagle craft.

Doug Braendel, an Army veteran, spoke about Vietnam and how he went to class and studied so he didn't have to keep watch for very long while serving. The Army let him have an office job because he could type and understood accounting and schedules. He discussed how important school and an education is in life.

Josh Lang, an Army veteran, showed a video of jumping out of an airplane and he went into the Army because of 9/11. He is still in civil service and feels a duty to serve.

Leo McKenzie, a Marine Corps veteran, showed pictures and medals. He discussed the different ranks you can earn. He told them how he only talked to his wife twice in 4 years and wrote many letters, not like it is today with video chats.
